THE URBAN TRANSPORT OFFICER MET THE VARIOUS TRANSPORT UNIONS IN THE KPONE-KATAMANSO MUNICIPALITY ON THURSDAY 8TH JANUARY, 2023

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Urban Transport Officer met the various Transport unions in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality on Thursday, 8th January, 2023 to satisfy its first quarter schedule of meeting for the year.

The details of the above mentioned issues are outlined in the subsequent pages.

1.1   BUSINESS OF THE DAY

          OBSERVATIONS

  • The road safety was formally known as National Road safety. It has been legislated by parliament to National Road Safety Authority. It is mandatory to educate drivers on road signs, usage of the road and accident intervention. The NRSA embarked on a vehicle monitoring to heck on the quality and health of the car. According to NRSA, the accident that occurred in 2022 was 14,960 numbers of vehicles and 25,734 deaths.
  • A car going on a long journey should have a logbook. Any station that hinders checks can be fined for GHS60, 000 and imprisoned for two years.
  • A vulcanizer should have a qualification of JHS certificate
  • A member should have satisfied certificate
  • As a driver before you operate, you need to register with a station union
  • Drivers training for every 2 years
  • Every station should train their members within every two years
  • NRSO hint on the purchase of expired tyres
  • Every driver should wear a seat belt and check on the maintenance of their vehicle before starting their day-to-day activities
  • Every driver should be wise on the road to avoid accident
  • Understand the road, if you don’t know the road, do pre-departure assessment
  • Avoid alcohol and drinks and the use of substance
  • Photocopy license is not a law
  • There is no checkpoint for cars
  • There are four police on a road
  • There is always inspector for the arrest of the gain of a driver’s license
  • The lower police rank shouldn’t go to the road without a high rank
  • The police enforce the law but do not make the law
  • The police have the right to arrest the driver on insurance

            RECOMMENDATIONS

  • There is no law for tricycle operation, in 2019 a team went to Rwanda to under study the use of tricycle
  • Always find a safe spot to pack your car once you feel intimidated
  • Do not pay any police personnel if you have been stop for a route check
  • A police in the uniform can check a driver’s license or high ranked officer
  • The MCE should focus on the road maintenance at new york that will enable the citizens to pay their property rate
  • No specific number of police personnel are to be on the road
  • The inspector can require for driver’s license

  • The police officer can arrest a driver with an expired license
  • Before anybody will operate in a station he must be part of an union
  • There is now an office for urban transport in the municipal assembly
  • There should be route audit every month
