REPORT ON SENSITIZATION ON TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING (TVET)

The office of the National Youth Authority (NYA) for the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) educated students of Junior High Schools (JHS) to consider vocational and technical education training for their second cycle education.

The team of the event was “the future Ghana: carving a new future through Green Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)” and was organized in collaboration with Royal- Africa Generational THINKERS also known as RAGet- Africa.

The KKMA Youth Director, Mrs. Janice Anaman-Mensah advised the students to disabuse their minds of the perception that, their level of education was for people who were not intelligent or drop-outs as perceived by a section of the public.

Addressing students of the Kpone-Bawaleshie JHS on the 21st June 2024, she said vocational and technical education gave a person a ready employment after school because it entailed learning of various skills.

She observed that some students who took their education seriously were even able to earn money while still in school to support themselves and their education.

A Senior Programme Officer for the African Education Watch, Divine kpe said people who offered TVET courses were as good as those in other fields. He said it was unfortunate that due to poor orientation of students at the JHS level by society, some young ones despite their interests in these fields had resorted to other courses so as to please their parents and guardians at the expense of their interests and abilities.

He advised parents to consider the interests of their children and guide them to make the right choices and not impose their preference on them. “There is no programme for brilliant students and those who are not. All programmes demand or require a lot of brain work, attention to detail and many more to achieve good results”, he stressed.

The District Youth director for the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly, Ernest Atta Boateng said as a product of TVET, he had benefitted immensely and also been able to serve his community as a plumber aside of his job at the office to augment his salary.

An Engineer, Belinda Akos Akaba advised the girls not to allow themselves to be intimidated by anyone to think they were not good enough to get into male dominated jobs. She said they should rather see ladies in such jobs as a force to reckon with and shine to dispel any rumor that TVET was a no-go area for the females. They should rather aspire to be the best and change the status quo as she had set out to do.

On the 26th June, 2024 the program was again held at Haana KKMA JHS in Kpone. Mrs. Anaman-Mensah addressed the students on their career choices and said TVET is not an alternative but rather a vital component to reduce the unemployment situation in the country. She further mentioned governments intervention with the necessary tools and equipping all TVET schools.

The facilitator Mrs. Agnes Sampson, who is a Beauty Consultant and the Chief Executive Officer of De- Paragon Beauty Institute, delivered a short brief on the importance of TVET education. In her brief, Mrs. Sampson indicated that she is a beauty therapy expert for World Skills Ghana and a member of the team that were engaged to designed the curriculum in Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing for the TVET Secretariat.

She told the participants about the various courses available to be pursued in the Technical and Vocational Schools and the Certificates issued after completion. She also stated that one can further his or her education to get a Degree, Masters and Doctorate level. Mrs. Sampson admonished the participants to change their mindset and mentality that TVET education is meant for those who are academically weak.

The program ended with participants given the opportunity to ask questions and answers were provided.

In conclusion Mrs. Anaman-Mensah told the students to embrace TVET to shape their future, make impact in their communities and contribute to the growth of Ghana.
