KKMA JOINS MECHANICS TO CLEAN SAKI HIGH TENSION

Saki (Kpone), Dec. 18 – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has joined mechanics at the Saki High Tension, a suburb in the municipality, to clean the area as part of the week-long National Sanitation Day exercise within the Greater Accra Region ahead of the yuletide.

Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), addressing the artisans after the exercise, said the initiative was aimed at clearing filth-prone areas and promoting responsible waste management within the municipality.

Mr Morton noted that the Saki High Tension enclave, where artisans operate under pylons belonging to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), had become a refuse hotspot, posing health and environmental risks to residents.

He said the National Sanitation Day exercise was not a one-day affair but rather formed part of a broader, week-long effort to ensure that the communities were kept clean and safe.

He urged the artisans and occupants of the area not to make sanitation a periodic activity but a daily habit, stressing that consistent cleanliness was the only way to sustain gains made during such exercises.

Mr George Freeman, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Environmental Officer, noted that citizens must not wait for the National Sanitation Day before they clean their surroundings, stressing that residents must make every day a sanitation day for their immediate surroundings to remain free of filth.

The exercise saw environmental health officers working alongside artisans and volunteers to desilt choked drains, collect heaps of refuse, and clear overgrown weeds within the enclave.

The refuse collected was later transported to designated disposal sites by waste management trucks arranged by the Assembly.

Residents and participants commended the KKMA for the initiative and called for sustained monitoring to prevent the re-emergence of indiscriminate dumping in the area.

The Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation bylaws and intensifying public education to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all residents, especially during the festive season.
