Hon. Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kpone-Katamanso, has reiterated the importance of the monthly National Sanitation Day, urging residents to actively support efforts to keep the Kpone Laaloi Beach clean in order to protect public health and enhance tourism.
Speaking at the May clean-up exercise held along the beach on 3rd May 2026, Hon. Morton described the area as a valuable tourist destination with strong potential to contribute to the municipality’s economic growth if properly maintained. He explained that beyond recreation, the beach provides livelihoods for many fisherfolk and traders, making its upkeep a shared duty between the Assembly and the community.
He warned that the Assembly would not hesitate to enforce strict sanctions against individuals who litter along the coastline, describing such actions as outdated and unacceptable in a developing municipality. He also encouraged residents and community leaders to adopt better waste disposal habits, stressing that sanitation should not be left solely to the Assembly.
Mr. George Freeman, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer of KKMA, also indicated that the Assembly would soon enforce its sanitation by-laws to punish offenders. He noted that significant public funds are spent each year clearing waste from open areas and drains—resources he believes could instead be directed toward development projects such as roads, schools, and healthcare.
The exercise brought together assembly officials, environmental health officers, youth groups, and residents, who worked collectively to remove plastic waste and debris from the shoreline. It forms part of a nationwide initiative observed on the first Saturday of every month to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
