GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY FOR NEW NHIS OFFICE IN KPONE-KATAMANSO MUNICIPALITY

The construction of the new National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality is set to be completed within eight months and will be executed by Handosky International Limited.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday 1st October, 2025, Hon. Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), highlighted that since the municipality’s establishment in 2012, the Assembly has made continuous efforts to expand social infrastructure. He emphasized that the commencement of this project reflects the government’s commitment to making essential services more accessible to the people.

Hon. Morton underscored the importance of the NHIS as one of Ghana’s most impactful social intervention programs, offering affordable healthcare to citizens from all backgrounds. He noted, however, that the lack of a permanent, fully equipped NHIS office in the municipality has long presented challenges to efficient service delivery.

He expressed optimism that, upon completion, the facility would improve enrolment processes and customer service, providing residents with access to health insurance in a dignified and welcoming environment.

Hon. Morton also acknowledged the contributions of the Member of Parliament, assembly members, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders who have supported community-focused NHIS initiatives, including the organization of free registration drives. He extended appreciation to the NHIA and the government for prioritizing the project and urged all parties involved to ensure its timely completion. Furthermore, he encouraged the contractor and consultants to employ local residents during the construction phase to create job opportunities for the municipality’s youth.

Hon. Joseph Akuertey Tettey, the Member of Parliament for the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency, reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the NHIS by improving infrastructure and ensuring financial protection to achieve universal health coverage. He noted that the provision of land for the project by the Assembly and traditional authorities followed discussions on the pressing need to establish a local NHIA office to eliminate the inconvenience of residents travelling to other districts for health insurance services.

He also urged the contractor to adhere to project timelines and maintain high construction standards.

Mr. Osman Iddurisu Bampuori, NHIA Greater Accra Regional Operations Manager, attributed the project to the strong leadership within the municipality, particularly the efforts of the Paramount Chief of Kpone, Nii Tetteh Otu II, and local government officials, in supporting NHIA’s goal of expanding access to healthcare.

Dr. Priscilla Esther Biamah Danquah, the Municipal Health Director, stressed that for years, residents have faced significant difficulties in accessing NHIS services, often traveling long distances to register, renew, or resolve issues—causing both financial and time-related burdens. She explained that these obstacles have discouraged many from enrolling in the scheme, particularly the most vulnerable groups in society.

She stressed that the new office will not only bring essential health insurance services closer to the people but will also be instrumental in advancing universal healthcare coverage, with effective health financing as a key component.

“We look forward to this facility becoming a symbol of hope—improving enrolment, increasing accessibility, and ensuring accountability in health insurance service delivery,” Dr. Danquah said, pledging the Assembly’s full support to NHIA in ensuring the success of the initiative and building a more inclusive healthcare system.

Representing the Paramount Chief, Nii Tetteh Otu II, the Chief of Nmlitsakpo, Nii Tetteh Oglie II, acknowledged the significance of the project as a vital step towards broader development in the Kpone-Katamanso area. He pointed out that the municipality continues to face several developmental challenges and appealed to the government for further support.
