KPONE-KATAMANSO MCE RALLIES RESIDENTS FOR BEACH CLEAN-UP
Hon. Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kpone-Katamanso, has reiterated the importance of the monthly National Sanitation Day, urging residents to actively support efforts to keep the Kpone Laaloi Beach clean in order to protect public health and enhance tourism.
Speaking at the May clean-up exercise held along the beach on 3rd May 2026, Hon. Morton described the area as a valuable tourist destination with strong potential to contribute to the municipality’s economic growth if properly maintained. He explained that beyond recreation, the beach provides livelihoods for many fisherfolk and traders, making its upkeep a shared duty between the Assembly and the community.

The Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly has intensified the monthly national sanitation day exercise to ensure improved environmental cleanliness across communities in the municipality.
The exercise, which forms part of the nationwide sanitation campaign, was held at the Katamansu Electoral Area within the municipality and attracted residents, traditional authorities, and various stakeholders.
KKMA JOINS MECHANICS TO CLEAN SAKI HIGH TENSION
Saki (Kpone), Dec. 18 – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has joined mechanics at the Saki High Tension, a suburb in the municipality, to clean the area as part of the week-long National Sanitation Day exercise within the Greater Accra Region ahead of the yuletide.
MCE LEADS NATIONAL SANITATION DAY AT KKMA
Hon. Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has led residents, Assembly members, staff and various stakeholders in the National sanitation day exercise in Kpone.
The National sanitation day aimed at promoting cleanliness and improving environmental hygiene brought together community members to sweep, desilt drains, clear refuse dumps and weed public spaces.
CLEAN-UP EXERCISE BY KKMA NATIONAL SERVICE PERSONNELS
On Friday, 20th June 2025, a clean-up exercise was carried out by the National Service Personnel stationed at the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA).
The exercise was organized in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of KKMA as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and public health within the municipality.

Sorting and handing out tools for the clean-up activity
The clean-up commenced in the early hours of the day and covered the stretch from Kpone Barrier to the Saki Taxi Station. The activity saw the enthusiastic participation of national service personnel, staff from the Environmental Health Unit, and some members of the local community.
Participants were equipped with tools such as brooms, rakes, wheelbarrows, and protective gear, ensuring that the exercise was carried out efficiently and safely.

Areas along the route were swept, gutters were desilted, and refuse was collected and properly disposed of.
The Municipal NSS Manager; Mr. Immanuel Nii Larte Lartey, commended the service personnel for their dedication and commitment to community service. He emphasized the importance of such exercises in fostering environmental awareness and civic responsibility, especially among the youth. The clean-up exercise ended successfully, with noticeable improvements in the cleanliness of the targeted areas.

The Assemblyman for the Nmlitsakpo Electoral Area, Hon. Issac Newton expressed his appreciation for the initiative. In a brief remarks, he stated that, “Cleanliness is a shared responsibility. I am proud of the efforts by the National Service Personnel and urge residents to support and maintain the cleanliness of our surroundings even after such exercises.”
Also in attendance was the Head of the Environmental Health Unit of KKMA, Mr. George Freeman. He commended the service personnel for their enthusiasm and commitment. He noted, “Sanitation is at the heart of public health. Today’s exercise not only helps improve our environment but also serves as a learning platform for the youth on the importance of hygiene and community service.”

The clean-up exercise was also used to educate residents and commuters on the need to maintain a clean environment and adopt proper waste disposal practices.

DESILTING EXERCISE CARRIED OUT ALONG KPONE KOKOMPE MTN JUNCTION TO KPONE BARRIER
INTRODUCTION
The desilting exercise was conducted from Monday 17th to Thursday 20th February, 2025 along the Kpone Kokompe MTN junction to Kpone barrier stretch. This exercise aimed to clear the drains of solid particles, silt, plastics, and other debris that had accumulated and were causing blockages.
BACKGROUND
The drains along the Kpone Kokompe MTN junction to Kpone barrier stretch had become severely clogged due to the accumulation of solid particles, silt, plastics, and other debris. This blockage posed serious risks to the environment, public health, and safety. The exercise aimed to address these concerns and restore the proper flow of water through the drains.
OBJECTIVES
The primary objectives of the desilting exercise were:
- To clear the drains of solid particles, silt, plastics, and other debris.
- To restore the proper flow of water through the drains.
- To reduce the risk of flooding and environmental pollution.
- To promote public health and safety.
METHODOLOGY
The exercise employed a combination of backhoe and tipper trucks to remove the debris and silt from the drains. The operation was carefully planned and executed to minimize disruptions to traffic and daily activities.

The clean-up exercise, held at Katamanso on Saturday, 8th February, 2025, was a resounding success. The event, which commenced at 6:40am and concluded at 12:56pm, brought together over 360 participants from various sectors of the community.

The primary objective of the exercise was to clean up the environment, focusing on streets, open spaces, and public drains. The scope of the exercise included sweeping, weeding, and desilting, utilizing both manual labor and mechanical equipment, such as backhoes.
PRE-EXERCISE ORIENTATION
Prior to the commencement of the exercise, the Municipal Environmental Health Analyst, George Freeman, educated the participants on the methodology of the exercise and the importance of keeping the environment clean. He emphasized that sanitation is a shared responsibility, requiring collective effort to maintain a clean environment. He also highlighted the numerous benefits of keeping the environment clean, including preventing the spread of diseases, promoting public health, and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the community.
KEY ACTIVITIES AND PARTICIPANTS
- The exercise kicked off at the Katamanso school junction, where participants gathered to begin the clean-up process.
- The Paramount Chief for Katamanso addressed the participants after the program, commending their efforts and emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
- The NCCE vehicle was utilized for public announcements and sensitization, guided by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Assembly.
- Hon. Assembly Member Joshua Bortey played a crucial role in mobilizing participants, joining Environmental Health staff to ensure a strong turnout.
- Participants included the Paramount Chief and his sub chiefs, Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Mohammed Ali Amadu; Municipal Environmental Health Analyst, George Freeman; Hon. Assembly members; artisans; transport unions; market women; traders; Environmental Health Officers; Heads of Department and Units of the Assembly, staff of the Assembly and staff of Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
POST-EXERCISE REFRESHMENTS
After the exercise, participants were refreshed and revitalized, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to maintaining a clean environment.
OUTCOMES AND IMPACT
- The exercise resulted in the collection of significant amounts of refuse, silt, and other waste, which were disposed of in a sanitary manner using skip trucks and tricycles.
- The clean-up exercise demonstrated the community’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.
- The event also fostered collaboration and teamwork among participants from diverse backgrounds, strengthening community bonds and promoting social cohesion.
CONCLUSION
