The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) joined the nation to celebrate the 41st edition of the national farmers’ day at Saki on 5th Dec, 2025. The celebration was on the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the future,”
Thirteen (13) farmers, fisher folks and processors were awarded for their tremendous contribution to agriculture in the Municipality.

In her welcome address, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, Madam Hajia Adam Ayi said farmers’ day holds a special place in the nation’s calendar. She noted that KKMA has successfully organized 13 farmers’ day celebration since it was carved out of the Tema Metro Assembly.

Madam Ayi explained further that the theme for the celebration captured the importance of agriculture vision and reminded the country that by producing and consuming locally grown food, Ghanaians would not only support farmers but also strengthen the economy. The celebration, according to her was to recognize the tireless efforts of the farmers and provide an opportunity for them to reflect on the path ahead. She stated that the Assembly was committed to supporting innovations that strengthened agricultural resilience, enhanced productivity and promoted sustainability for the next generation. Madam Ayi also encouraged the farmers to come together to embrace practices that did not only withstand environmental challenges but also ensure continuous growth and prosperity for the Municipality and the country.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency, Hon. Joseph Akuerteh Tettey expressed his massive appreciation to the farmers for their valuable contributions and efforts towards the growth and development of the Municipality and country at large. Hon. Tettey emphasized that the government in the 2025 budget statement promised to improve the agricultural economy and provide farmers with fertilizer and machinery to improve the economy.

Hon Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in his keynote address noted that agriculture remained the backbone of Ghana’s economy, providing food, employment and raw materials for industry.
Hon. Morton said despite the rapid urbanisation within the Municipality, agriculture continued to be a vital contributor to livelihoods. He stated that vegetable farmers, fishermen, livestock rearers, fish processors and food traders work diligently to ensure that the Municipality and the country have access to fresh and nutritious food. He said the Assembly had worked closely with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to promote urban and peri-urban agriculture.

He encouraged households to grow vegetables and food produce within limited spaces. Hon Morton revealed that farmers within the Municipality had benefitted from training on irrigation management, safe pesticide application and post- harvest handling to minimize losses and enhance productivity.
Hon. Morton highlighted some of the challenges confronting farmers as land encroachment, climate change, limited financial access and the decline in interest of youth in agriculture. The MCE added that the Assembly was improving land use planning, promoting environmental sustainability and engaging financial institutions to expand loan access to farmers and encourage the youth to embrace agriculture as a profitable business.
The chairperson for the occasion, Nii Tetteh Oglie II, Mantse of Nmlitsakpo, Saki acknowledged farmers as the backbone of the nation, ensuring that food was available to the public.

Mr. Ebenezer Nii Mensah Laryea was adjudged as the overall Municipal best farmer. For his award, he received a certificate, a tricycle, three wellington boots, a knapsack sprayer, five bags of fertilizer, and two litres of insectides, among others.
Briefing the media, Mr. Ebenezer Nii Mensah Laryea thanked the Assembly for the award and encouraged farmers within the Municipality and across the country to continue working hard to feed the nation.
