13- MEMBER DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE INAUGURATED

A 13-member Municipal Disaster Management Committee for the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has been inaugurated to efficiently manage and mitigate disasters in the municipality. The inaugural ceremony was held on 21st August, 2025 at the Assembly Hall.

The composition of the Municipal Disaster Management Committee include; the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Director of Nadmo as secretary, the Chairperson of the Municipal Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate change Risk Management, the Member of Parliament in the Municipality, the Municipal Director of Health Service, a representative of the Garrison Commander of the Armed Forces. The rest are the Municipal Police Commander, the Municipal Fire Officer, the Municipal Information Officer, Municipal Director of Education, the Municipal Environmental Officer, the Municipal Planning Officer and the Municipal Social Development Welfare Officer.

In his opening remarks; the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel T.K. Morton who is the chairperson of the committee said the Municipal Disaster Management Committee is an important committee that would prepare and plan for the Municipality to prevent and mitigate disasters. It also expected to maintain a close liaison with the Regional Disaster Committee to draw up plans and perform in the Municipality, the functions directed by the council.

The Member of Parliament for the Kpone Katamanso Constituency; Hon. Joseph Akuerteh Tettey stressed on empowering the National Disaster and Management Organization(NADMO) to effectively manage and respond to disasters as soon as they occur in the Municipality. Hon. Tettey also called for stronger public education on disaster prevention for residents across the Municipality.

The Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD); Mr. Ali Amadu Mohammad suggested that the Works Department, Urban roads  Engineer and Physical Planning Department should be co-opted into the committee. He advised members of the committee to be abreast with how to handle disasters and entreated them to share information on how to manage disasters when they occur. He promised that all necessary resources would be provided to the committee to make it perform its mandated roles.
